The Value of a Good Reputation
Bible Literacy, Discipleship, & You
Faith comes by hearing...hearing by
the Word of God!
The Word of God is critical for faith development
and for healthy spiritual growth. Many people struggle to understand the Word, yet this is God’s revealed Word to us and His desire is for us to read it so we can know Him and walk with Him by faith.
On October 19-20, Hardy Street Baptist Church will host the Bible Literacy Conference as we learn together about Chronological Bible Discipleship.
You will not want to miss this event!
This may well be the most significant/important weekend in the history of our church! I want to personally invite believers from all over South Mississippi to join us!
The conference registration is $20 which includes conference materials
(including a One-year Chronological Bible), a light lunch and more.

Inspiration comes from a variety of places... but a stories of tenacity, overcoming odds, and determination seem to touch the soul! When a person faces their fears, establishes a positive mindset and hits high marks of achievement, it inspires and nourishes the human spirit.
I recently finished reading an incredible book that captures just that spirit! Unfinished Business by Levi and Terry Gurno (order here) is book for anyone with fears to overcome and dreams to reawaken.
I am excited to interview my friend, Terry Gurno (terrygurno.com) next week for an upcoming leadership podcast! His story is so motivational! I look forward to sharing this episode with you in our new "Digital Leadership Lounge".
I strongly recommend that you get the book "Unfinished Business"!

Living in Awe of Jesus
When was the last time you saw something that was so wonderful, so amazing, that it took your breath away? A sunrise or sunset... A mountain peak or an ocean shoreline. Perhaps it was the birth of a baby or maybe a virtuoso musician playing with such skill, precision, and passion that you were moved to tears! When was the last time you were in complete and total awe of something?
In Luke 5, Jesus read the thoughts of the people around Him and He also performed a miracle of healing... the response of the people? Verse 26 tells us "And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
As we move into the Fall season of life (school, sports, holidays and festivities) it is easy to be overworked and underwhelmed... We get so caught up in the race that we lose sight of anything glorious or "awe" inspiring. I want to help you recapture a sense of awe. I urge you to pause and reflect at the magnificence of Jesus Christ!
I am challenging our church family and all of my friends to join me on a 14 day journey toward living in awe of Jesus.
Phil Waldrep (Phil Waldrep Ministries) has written a wonderful 14 day devotional guide to help us do just that! Its called 14 Days of Purpose: a Challenge to live in awe of Jesus. You can download it below. Beginning on Wednesday, August 1st, begin this journey of seeking Jesus with me! I look forward to hearing how He fills you with awe and wonder!
In this week's "Tuesday Tune-up", I talked about the subject of contentment... A very elusive state of mind for most of us. I hope that you will take a little time this week and consider the questions below! I'd love to hear some of your answers and your feedback! Let me hear from you! Email me here.
The Apostle, Paul explains the path to contentment in Philippians 4:11 (NIV), “…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” God did not zap Paul, and suddenly the man emitted dazzling rays of contentment. Paul struggled through the ups and downs of his walk with God. As his heart drew closer to God Paul’s life goals and his desires changed. Recall his mission statement from Philippians 1:21 (NIV), “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Only when Jesus became Paul’s one thing could the apostle live above his circumstances and model contentment.
We learn new things by investing time in study and practice. We read and research. We capture notes and review. We ask questions of those more knowledgeable on the subject. We discuss our findings with others seeking the same knowledge. Our goal of contentment demands penetrating personal evaluation.
That’s something for sinners saved by grace to think about, isn’t it?

Jesus Christ did not come into this world to make bad people good; He came into this world to make dead people live. – Lee Strobel
The celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is one month away and I am overwhelmed with excitement. I am praying that this Easter, Christians will seize the opportunity to share their faith, invite friends and family members to explore the truth. My prayer is that this Easter, the lost would "Come Alive".
Over 2,000 years ago, God's plan of redemption altered the world! The power of sin and death was broken through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ that first Easter. I am inviting you to experience a fresh start in life through a special Easter series! On Palm Sunday, March 25th at 10:30 am, Good Friday at 6:30 p.m. and on April 1 (Easter Sunday Morning) I will be sharing the most profound claims of Christianity... Discover how an encounter with God's love and sacrifice can impact your life today!
Make plans to join us on this Holy Week journey!
Jesus overcame death...and HERE'S why it matters.
A Prayer For the New Year
Hardy Street Baptist Church Associate Pastor, Scott Alexander shared a compelling word on New Year’s Eve about discipleship.
He emphasized the importance of intentional investment —that we do not stumble into Godliness and growth, but rather, we must be intentionally engaged in this discipling process.
He also added some great advice about “relational investment”. The process of discipleship doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You need others! God designed it that way! In Ephesians 4:11-16, we see God’s design for discipleship laid out. He gifts leaders who equip the saints for the work of ministry. AND we know from Scripture, that God desires ALL believers to be disciple-makers.
That means you cannot do it alone! You need others speaking into your life and you need to speak into the lives of others!
You need specific relationships in your life that God uses to make you better! What are these relationships? Leadership and relationship coaches say that everyone needs a teacher, a student and a friend. Financial guru, Dave Ramsey frames it up this way, "As Christians, we can confidently say that everyone needs a Paul, a Timothy and a Barnabas.”
Motivational speaker Charlie “Tremendous” Jones used to say that five years from now, you’ll be the same person you are today except for the books you read and the people you meet. In other words, we need the accountability and support that come when others invest in our lives. Our interactions with others matter! So why not pray for those relationships?
You need to be both “influenced” and “influencer”!
In Sunday’s message, Scott challenged us to pray specifically for those discipling relationships, so here is a great prayer for every believer in this new year:
Pray for a “Paul” … Someone who will disciple you! Pray for a Paul figure who will speak into your life, hold you accountable, stretch you in your faith! Who is that person? If you don’t have them identified, pray and ask God to reveal them to you! God wants all of us to grow to maturity in Christ, and since His design is for people to be involved in the process…this is a prayer aligned with His will… He WILL answer this one!
Pray for a “Timothy”… Someone to invest and pour into. To disciple someone else, you don’t have to have it all together, have all the answers, or be fully matured. To make a spiritual impact in the lives of others, you need to be yielded to God and obedient to the Great Commission call to disciple-making! Pray for God to give you influence in the lives of others (specifically, a “Timothy” figure that you can encourage).
In addition to those discipling relationships, I want to suggest a third prayer request:
Pray for a “Barnabas”… encouraging friends that will divide the load of trouble and burden, multiply the joys of celebration, and will inspire and motivate you along the path!
Praying for a “Paul”, a “Timothy”, & a “Barnabas” in this New Year is a great way to obediently join God at His work!
Your “Paul” is the mentor/coach/discipler who pours his life and wisdom into your life, while your “Timothy” receives the same blessing from you. You need to sit at the feet of people who are further along the journey than you are. As you do, you will find that pouring your life into someone else can be incredibly energizing! And being a friend will attract friends and having friend will make all the difference in the journey!
Zig Ziglar often told a story about how Belgian horses are trained to work together—and how it made these incredible animals so much more effective. Belgian horses are huge, powerful animals. In fact, one Belgian can pull more than 8,000 pounds.
THAT’S A LOT OF HORSEPOWER!
A strange thing, however, is that if you put two Belgian horses together who are strangers, they don’t just double the amount they can pull to 16,000 pounds; they actually triple it to 24,000 pounds. And if you spend some time training them to work together, that unified pair can pull a whopping 32,000 pounds.
That’s four times what a single horse can do alone!
That story should remind us that connections are powerful—and not just for Belgian horses. People need healthy relationships to win at life, too.
God works through each of these relationships in our lives. He uses a Paul to guide us. He uses a Timothy to help us mature. And He uses a Barnabas to challenge us. In response, we should always be learning, teaching and loving.
I’m praying for you in this New Year, and I hope that you are praying for these relationships for your own life!
